Badge

Part of the Letters Patent, presented by the Chief Herald of Canada, granting the Coat of Arms and a flag to the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, also includes the description for an official badge. This badge is basically eight golden maple leafs joined together at their stems and over the maple leafs is a green octagon bearing the Cape Breton Sloop in gold (yellow) and silver (white). The number of maple leafs refers to the eight municipal units (City of Sydney, Towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, North Sydney, Sydney Mines, New Waterford, Louisbourg, and the Municipality of the County of Cape Breton) that were amalgamated on August 1, 1995, to become the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The octagon refers to the entity that was formed by this amalgamation. Surmounting the octagon is the Cape Breton Sloop, taken from the Great Seal of Cape Breton in the early 1800Ùs when Cape Breton was a British Colony.
The Municipality uses this distinctive symbol in a variety of ways. For example, the badge is used on blazers, by employees, in advertisements, as well as for identifying various types of municipal property.
