Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day® is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.

Barbara Reid, award-winning Canadian author and illustrator, is the Honourary Chair of Family Literacy Day! More info. at www.FamilyLiteracyDay.ca

Book Launch

Book Launch: Battle Royal Monarchists vs. Republicans and the Crown of Canada by David Johnson

McConnell Library (50 Falmouth Street, Sydney)

Tuesday, February 6th

7 PM

Join author and professor of political science at CBU, David Johnson for readings from his latest book Battle Royal: Monarchists vs. Republicans and the Crown of Canada. Readings to be followed by lively discussion and Q&A.

Everyone welcome. Books available for purchase and signing.

Battle Royal answers this question and many more: What does the Queen really do? What are the powers of the governor general? Has the Crown strengthened or weakened Canadian democracy? If we abolish the monarchy, what do we replace it with? And will we have to re-open the constitution?

David Johnson, a professor of political science at Cape Breton University, has studied and taught Canadian politics, government, and the constitution for over thirty years. He’s the author (or co-author) of three books, numerous articles on his fields of study and a regular columnist for the Cape Breton Post.
