The Amended List of Electors has been prepared for the October 15, 2016 Municipal and School Board Elections. Eligible voters are now able to confirm whether or not they are on the Voters' List using an online Electronic Voter Lookup tool on this site: http://www.cbrm.ns.ca/elections2016-am-i-on-the-list.html

If you are not on the list, please contact the Returning Office at 902-563-5010, e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or in person at City Hall, 320 Esplanade, Sydney, Suite 405. 


Every person who:

(a) is the full age of eighteen years on the first advance polling day (October 5);
(b) is a Canadian Citizen on the first advance polling day; and
(c) has been ordinarily resident in the Province of Nova Scotia for a period of six months immediately preceding the first advance polling day (April 5); and
(d) is ordinarily resident in the municipality and has been since immediately before the first advance polling day.
And who is not otherwise disqualified as per Section 15 of the Act.


If you will be turning 18 years of age on or before October 5th, 2016, please contact the Returning Office before September 30th to make sure your name is on the List.


CBRM firefighters headed to National FireFit Championships

Sydney, NS – Firefighters from the Cape Breton Regional Municipality won gold medals at the Atlantic FireFit Championships in Summerside, PEI this past weekend. All gold medal winners for each category automatically qualify to compete at the 2016 National Championships in September in Spruce Meadows, Alberta.

The FireFit Championships is a competition based on firefighting tasks commonly performed in emergency situations.

CBRM firefighters brought home three gold medals. Kylie Ballah won the gold medal in the female competition with a time of 3:07. Kylie Ballah and Todd Ballah also won the gold for the mixed two-person relay competition with a time of 2:13.

Councillor Darrell Flynn mourned by Mayor and Council

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton Regional Municipality's Mayor and Councillors are mourning the passing of their colleague and friend, Darrell Flynn. Flynn was hospitalized on June 22 with complications related to pneumonia.

Flynn, 58, was the owner of Sydney’s Swiss Chalet restaurant. A successful businessman, Flynn decided to enter municipal politics to serve his community and won a by-election in District 10 on December 6, 2014. Prior to serving as a CBRM Councillor, he served with distinction as an elected member of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to Darrell’s wife Eileen, children Emily Grace and Pat, and family," said Mayor Cecil Clarke. “We are deeply saddened by this sudden and tragic loss of such a good person, in the prime of his life, giving back to his community.”

Major upgrade to Munro Park now underway

NORTH SYDNEY, NS – Construction has begun on major upgrades to the playing field at North Sydney’s Munro Park. Munro Park took first place in the 2015 Kraft Project Play online contest, winning $250,000 to rebuild the soccer field.

Kraft’s Project Play is a competition to provide funding to upgrade play facilities in communities across Canada.

Clean up day on Saturday in nearly 30 locations around CBRM

SYDNEY, NS - A litter clean-up day is planned for communities across Cape Breton Regional Municipality on Saturday, May 14. The Great Cape Breton Clean Up starts at 9:00 a.m. with a complimentary BBQ for volunteers at noon.

Almost 30 sites across CBRM will be hosting the clean up day. Residents are encouraged to attend the site in their community. Residents can also clean up near their home. Litter in clear bags will be collected on the next garbage day.

More acts added to Givin’ Back to The Mac concert at C200

Bruce Guthro and the Men of the Deeps to perform at benefit for Fort McMurray

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton performers Bruce Guthro, the Men of the Deeps, Aaron Lewis, Jordan Musycsyn and the MacArthur Dancers will join Matt Minglewood and the Barra MacNeils in a fundraising concert to support relief efforts in Fort McMurray. Bette MacDonald and Maynard Morrison are hosts and MC.

Tickets for the event go on sale Tuesday, May 10 (STARTING AT 11 AM) at the Centre 200 box office and Savoy Theatre. Tickets are general admission $20.

Major concert event at Centre200 to raise funds for Fort Mac

SYDNEY, NS - CBRM’s Centre 200 in Sydney will be the site of a major concert event in support of Fort McMurray relief efforts. Board of Police Commissioners welcomes new citizen appointees

Sydney, NS – Three citizens of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality were appointed to the CBRM Board of Police Commissioners by Council during the February 16, 2016 meeting.

Nadine Bernard of Sydney, Joe Meaney of North Sydney and Emerson Duff of Glace Bay have accepted their positions for a two-year term. The first meeting of the new commission is Thursday, March 3, 2016.
