The Art of Storytelling (Sat. 21 Apr, 2018 10:00 am - 12:00 pm)

The Art of Storytelling: a workshop for youth ages 12-21

Saturdays - April 7, April 21 (1-3 PM)
McConnell Library (Sydney)

So you think fairy tales are only in children’s books like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty? Think again.

Here at home, Cape Breton storytellers of every culture have been passing along fantastic “wonder” tales from generation to generation, and we’d like to keep them alive.

Come to this storytelling workshop, and be part of the “Wonder Tales” event during the ‘Isle of Story Festival’ in early May. No experience necessary!  Participants will have a chance to tell a tale at the event if they choose.

The Library’s Storyteller-in-Residence, Ronald Labelle will lead this two-part workshop. In Session 1, participants will choose a traditional tale collected by Jean Deveaux, an Acadian storyteller who lived in Glace Bay.  We will use English translations of the tales, or the original French if the participant wishes.  In Session 2, participants will practice telling one of Jean’s tales, or maybe another tale they’ve found, and get feedback from others.

Professional storyteller Marta Singh will be at the “Isle of Story Festival” and will offer advice and encouragement to our latest generation of storytellers at the “Wonder Tales” event.  So come and take advantage of this unique opportunity!

To register call the McConnell Library at 902-562-3161.

One Hour, Two Books with Author A.J.B. (John) Johnston (Tue. 24 Apr, 2018 7:00 pm)

One Hour, Two Books with author A.J.B. (John) Johnston

McConnell Library

Tuesday, April 24

7 PM

Join award-winning author and historian, A.J.B. (John) Johnston for the official launch of his latest books ‘Something True’ and ‘The Hat’.

‘Something True’ is a coming-of-age novel, inspired by the true-life story of Katharine McLennan (1892-1975), a prominent figure in Cape Breton history. As the daughter of J.S. McLennan, one of the early managers of Cape Breton’s coal and steel industries, Katharine’s lifestyle allowed for travel, study and private tutors that helped her develop a range of passions and interests.

Katharine supported many local causes in Cape Breton, including the Cape Breton Regional Library. She was a long-time Library Board trustee and she donated the land that the McConnell Library sits on.

‘The Hat‘ is a young adult novel giving a fresh, 21st-century take on the Acadian Deportation from Grand Pre in 1755. It is a poignant, suspenseful novel about how two children and a whole village deal with forces and events beyond their control.

Everyone is welcome to attend this launch.

The Cape Breton Curiosity Shop will be on hand to sell copies of the books and the author will be available to sign them.

A.J.B. (John) Johnston is well known as a historian with Parks Canada for more than thirty years and as an author or co-author of thirteen books and over 100 articles on different aspects of Atlantic Canadian history. The Canadian Historical Association awarded a Clio prize to Johnston’s book Endgame 1758: The Promise, the Glory and the Despair of Louisbourg’s Last Decade. Johnston was made a chevalier of France’s Ordre des Palmes académiques in recognition of his many publications on the history of the French in Atlantic Canada.
