Whitney Pier's Ward Five. Multicultural, Industrial and still Discoverable.

This year we will be exploring the historic ward 5 district of Sydney's Whitney Pier.

In 2014 the development of Whitney Pier was designated a National Historic Event as it brought many varied cultures together to help build and work at the Sydney Steel Plant.

The walk starts the at Whitney Pier Historical Museum (former Adath Israel Synagogue) at 2:00 PM. The museum will be open so we invite people to come early and look around if they wish.

In keeping with the spirit of the Jane's Walks this year's urban walk will take us past St. Philip's African Orthodox Church, Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Mary's Polish Church, the Whitney Pier Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and sites of current or former ethno-cultural halls and businesses along the Victoria Road commercial area, plus the recently named Galicia St.

This will be a very compact, easy walk of approximately 2 kilometres length and 2.5 hours duration. As in past years walkers often become occasional tour guides offering insight into shops, places, streets and neighbourhoods often overlooked. All are welcome to attend and participate.

About The Event
The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 20km/h (12 mph), wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
