For our first Natural History Series talk of 2019, Dr. Pat Maher, Associate Professor of Community Studies and Outdoor Leadership at CBU, will introduce us to the Unama'ki Cape Breton Outdoor Network (UCBON).

UCBON is a network of outdoor leaders and organizations whose purpose is to support and enhance outdoor life across Unama'ki, Cape Breton Island. In alignment with provincial and national networks, they aim to promote outdoor leadership training, education and mentorship; share resources; increase the number of outdoor events and activities across the island; increase engagement with and respect for nature and promote diverse cultural outdoor traditions.

We will be celebrating Family Literacy Day's 20th anniversary in carnival style at the McConnell Library. Join us for a puppet show, carnival activity stations, face-painting, crafts, a photo booth and healthy snacks!

Sponsored by the Adult Learning Association of Cape Breton County, Cape Breton's Family Place Resource Centre and the Cape Breton Regional Library.

Family Literacy Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other learning activities as a family.

Ice Skating Party and Wagon Rides (Sun. 27 Jan, 2019 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

Why not try something truly Canadain with a historic twist - free wagon rides and skating at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site! You're invited to join in on January 27 from 1 PM to 3 PM for an afternoon of family fun. Enjoy a great winter event and treat yourself to hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire. Dress warm and don't forget to bring a helmet (mandatory for age 12 and under) along with your skates. This year's event is part of the Taste of Winter programming in collaboration with CBRM Recreation and Fortress Louisbourg Association.

Join Colin Waye on his journey to uncover the history of his grandfathers: Forman Way and his connection to the Cape Breton labour movement and Captain John Jarvis's life and death at sea.
