What is wastewater?
Water that has been adversely affected in some way by human activity.
Wastewater includes:
Sanitary: domestic, commercial, institutional and industrial sewage.
Storm: storm water, snow melt, urban runoff and groundwater.
What is wastewater treatment?
- Collection of sanitary and storm wastewater
- Removal of suspended solids
- Reduction of harmful bacteria and nutrients
Measurements that determine treatment levels:
TSS – total suspended solids
BOD – biochemical oxygen demand
Treatment levels: Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary
What wastewater treatment can't do
- Remove chemicals
- Remove pharmaceuticals
- Remove heavy metals
