Wastewater includes:

Sanitary: domestic, commercial, institutional and industrial sewage.

Storm:    storm water, snow melt, urban runoff andgroundwater.

What is wastewater treatment?

  • Collection of sanitary and storm wastewater
  • Removal of suspended solids
  • Reduction of harmful bacteria and nutrients

Measurements that determine treatment levels:

TSS – total suspended solids
BOD – biological oxygen demand
Treatment levels:Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary

What wastewater treatment can't do

  • Remove chemicals
  • Remove pharmaceuticals
  • Remove heavy metals
  • Emerging concerns
