CBRM wrapping up busiest construction season in municipality’s history

Over $21 million construction season for CBRM coming to a close

SYDNEY, NS - Asphalt plants closed last week, concluding the municipality’s busiest construction season to date. Work tallied over $21 million for the year, making up the largest one-year investment in roadwork and underground infrastructure in CBRM’s history.

The busy season saw improvements to the municipality’s water systems worth $12 million, with rehabilitation work done to over 11 kilometres of water main. A $1 million manhole replacement project is ongoing at approximately 70 per cent complete. Stormwater separation work, worth and additional $2 million, and lift station replacements, worth an additional $1 million, continue into 2018. The improvements to the existing water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure are funded 50 per cent federally through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF), 25 per cent by the Province of Nova Scotia and 25 per cent by the CBRM.

CBRM Transit Notice: Four downtown Sydney bus stops temporarily relocated this Friday and Saturday for street closure

This Friday and Saturday, December 1st and 2nd, CBRM Transit has four bus stops in downtown Sydney that will be temporarily relocated to the corner of Dorchester and George Street due to a road closure. Rerouting to the temporary Dorchester/George Street stop (across from Cape Breton Post building) will begin Friday, December 1 at 7:00 am, and continue until Saturday, December 2 at 5:00 pm.

Bus Stops to be rerouted to the Dorchester/George stop include:

On Charlotte Street:

1. In front of Maple Leaf restaurant

2. In front of Radio Building/Center for Craft and Design

3. In front of Khattar & Khattar Law

On Bentick Street:

4. In front of Elks Lodge (101 Bentick)

Intersection of Esplanade and Dorchester closed tomorrow

Due to ongoing work on the Esplanade water line replacement project in Sydney, the intersection of Esplanade and Dorchester Street will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, November 30 to through traffic.

A detour will be set up at Pitt Street, with traffic signage in place. Businesses between Pitt Street and Dorchester Street will be accessible throughout the day. The Joan Harris Cruise Pavilion, Flavor on the Water, the Courthouse, and other local businesses can be accessed by the north end of the Esplanade via York Street or Amelia Street. Access to the parking area on the waterfront will be restricted to the south entrance for the morning.

Section of the Esplanade closed to through-traffic on Monday

A section of the Esplanade between Desbarres Street and Dorchester Street in Sydney will be closed to traffic on Monday, November 27th, due to asphalt milling while work continues on the Esplanade waterline replacement project. Traffic signage will be in place. Access will be available intermittently throughout the day for local traffic, depending where crews are working at that time. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.

Council approves agreements for container terminal and logistics park development

PricewaterhouseCoopers reviewed the transaction on behalf of municipality

SYDNEY, NS – Agreements between the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and the developers of the proposed Novaporte container terminal and Novazone logistics park have been approved.

The proposed agreements were reviewed by the Montreal office of PricewaterhouseCoopers and the findings presented in a report to council by Richard Deslauriers, PwC’s Managing Director, Project Finance and Public-Private Partnership.

Deslauriers’s letter to council concluded that the transaction “meets CBRM’s goals and is a low risk approach for encouraging economic development”. The international firm was hired by CBRM to assess the reasonableness and adequacy of the proposed transaction of a port site lease and logistics site purchase. CBRM’s goals in the transaction are to recoup its investments, secure future tax revenue and encourage job creation.

Public input sought on CBRM budget priorities for 2018

SYDNEY, NS – Residents of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality are encouraged to participate in budget consultation meetings in late November and early December.

The meetings help guide CBRM Council in decision-making for the 2018-19 budget year. Mayor Cecil Clarke and each district's Councillor will attend the meetings along with key CBRM staff.

Orders of government meet to discuss One Nova Scotia progress

SYDNEY, NS – Representatives from Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s municipal, provincial and federal orders of government and First Nations are meeting on Tuesday, November 14 at Cape Breton University.

They are engaging in a roundtable discussion about our region’s successes and challenges in working toward the goals of the One Nova Scotia report.

As part of CBRM’s 100 Positive Changes Plan, an annual meeting will be hosted by CBRM Council, with invited Members of the Legislature and Members of Parliament, to discuss our region’s progress on the One Nova Scotia (Now or Never) report goals. https://onens.ca/

Tom Urbaniak will lead the roundtable discussion, touching on the report’s 19 goals and 12 game-changing strategies. Members of the public are welcome to attend. The meeting takes place at the Multiversity Room (near the Boardmore theatre entrance) at Cape Breton University at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, November 14.

Transit notice: no service this Saturday, Remembrance Day

There will be no service for Cape Breton Transiton on Remembrance Day, this Saturday, November 11. Full service will resume on Monday, November 13, 2017.

Asphalt patching in downtown Sydney this week.

Starting Wednesday, November 8, CBRM Public Works will be patching asphalt on Charlotte Street and Pitt Street in Sydney. Work will commence on Charlotte Street tomorrow with one lane closed to traffic, work will then move onto Pitt Street. Work is expected to continue for the rest of the week, weather dependant.

Traffic control will be in place and motorists may experience delays.
